Bold statement, I know. But since meeting a Mexican dude (hi Edgar) in Northern Thailand last year, my obsession with great, authentic Mexican food has turned up a few notches.
I remember one of my first family holidays, to Tenerife with my dad, sister and brother a long, long time ago. Dad found a Mexican place, and yeah sure – it was Tex-Mex (sorry, Edgar) but I loved it. We all did. So much so we went back again and again and just really enjoyed our spicy chicken fajitas, hand-wrapped at the table, probably the messiest but most fun eating experience I’d had in my life so far at that point.
So, even though, I’ve not yet been to Mexico, the food of this epic country fascinates and inspires me and gets me craving some spicy, messy and delicious freshly home-cooked tacos. With a hint of childhood holiday nostalgia thrown in there, too.
The best tacos in the UK, yeah I said it…
Working on an exciting new freelance project brought me to London this week. Jen (my friend, colleague and fellow blogger) knew she was hosting a food blogger, so her dinner and lunch choices, I must say, were exceptional. But this post is dedicated to LUNCH!
Tucked away inside the Wood Street Indoor Market in Walthamstow, you’ll find a crazy, cool and authentic little Mexican Taqueria.
Chef Smoky greeted us with a huge smile, was soooooo accommodating, took our order and got to work as we sat outside on the little terrace out the back. And before you think or ask; no, he did not know I was a blogger, nor did he know I was going to write him a review hailing his tacos as the best in the UK.
Jen ordered her usual (as she works close by on a regular basis) two pork (cochinito en chipotle) tacos and I opted for one pork and one roasted veggie taco – not the most Mexican of choices but, VEG ☑️
We had the nachos with guac and fried beans to share and two cans of coke. The bill was £16 in total.
When they arrived just LOOKING at them, I knew they were going to be insanely tasty 🤤😍
A Machester-based taco establishment recently tweeted stating that it’s hard to make tacos look good, or something along those lines. Well, I say pfffft to that! What a load of crap. This is possibly the most Instagrammable tray of food I’ve ever seen and this lot was homemade and prepared by one chef, not a team of many. So, have a think about that!
Blue corn tortillas which were so fresh, an amazing texture and had a delicate flavour. Homemade medium and hot salsas (we didn’t try the mild but it was there) both so fricking delicious, hot and rich. Mmmm.
The guacamole, fried beans, pico de gallo type salsa – honestly, IT WAS ALL SO DELICIOUS I COULD ACTUALLY CRY!
On an end note: *some* (not all) Manchester taco places really, desperately need to take note and up their game 📝
Because seriously this stuff was NEXT LEVEL, and was inside a market, so restaurants should be able to do better. Plus, I really need tacos of this divine quality available within a very short distance. Thank you.

I have (clearly) not tried all the tacos in the UK. So, if you know of any other places as incredibly fresh and delicious as this, leave a comment below and I will be sure to check them out 😋🌮
These look absolutely delicious – I think I’ll have to get myself over to this joint to try them out ASAP!
